Jack Tygett Scholarship

This scholarship(s) was established in memory of Jack Tygett and his strong belief in the arts! Jack Tygett
was an amazing man who was an inspiration to thousands of students in the Sweetwater district as well as
an icon in the San Diego theater community. In addition to his incredible teaching career, Mr. Tygett had
a professional career on stage and screen, dancing in over 30 movies, including "Mary Poppins" and
"Oklahoma," and with the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Fred Astaire. He was also a professional director
and choreographer, sharing his talents and wealth of experience with the Old Globe, Starlight, Moonlight,
Lawrence Welk, and La Jolla Stage Company Theaters. He was instrumental in starting the Musical
Theater program at USIU, which drew talented students from all over the country, including Jamie Fox.
Jack Tygett was originally hired as the first dance teacher at Del Rey High School in 1976, and was one
of the major forces behind the big SUHSD summer musical productions. He worked tirelessly, along
with his colleagues, to create the SCPA program for the Sweetwater District, and his expertise in theater
arts contributed immensely to the success of this model Arts program over a span of nearly 30 years.
Some of the words used to describe this man by all who knew him include - gracious, kind, humble,
caring, positive, appreciative, rigorous, energetic, professional, motivating and generous with his time.
He was a person who gave much of himself to the Sweetwater district and never asked for or expected
anything in return. He was the "heartbeat" of the SCPA from the very beginning and his memory still
touches us with his kind and gentle spirit.
It is a privilege to be able to offer scholarships to young aspiring artists in his honor!
Scholarship Criteria
1) Must be a graduating senior from Chula Vista High School and the SCPA program
2) Must be in the top/advanced level of SCPA major with a 4.0 in all SCPA classes.
3) Will be attending college and continuing their involvement in the ARTS.
4) This completed application AND a copy of your high school transcript is due May 13, 2024 to Ms. Daniels in the Counseling Center. After submitting this form, contact your counselor to get transcript.
One scholarship is available for each of the four Arts disciplines: Dance; Drama; Music, Visual
Awards may vary from $200 - $5000.
